Starting a Youtube Vlog in 2020

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

I've been fascinated with filming & video editing for years and with all of the extra time that the Lockdowns have allowed this year, I've decided to finally commit to creating videos on the reg'.

I decided to follow the advice of the many "starting a Channel" Youtube videos that I watched by using my phone and just getting started instead of investing in expensive equipment from Day 1. After seeing a few YouTubers promote Filmora from Wondershare (which I think is a cheaper, Chinese manufactured, beginner friendly version of more Professional editing software like Final Cut or Premiere Pro) I downloaded it and have been using that instead of iMovie. I'm not embarrassed to admit that I used Apple's simple program to edit the first few videos that I posted. One of those videos (about travelling to Monaco from when I DJ'ed at the F1 Grand Prix) is now sitting at about 10K views. I've really understood in recent months that 'energy in = energy out' and over time this effort compounds into success. You have to be consistent and have a clear vision as there's no use in putting effort into a project or idea without a defined goal or criteria- that you're open to pivot as you progress. Those who are not committed enough and able to adapt will not be the ones who succeed.

With this in mind, next I had to think about what to make my channel about.

So far my edits have been mostly travel related [weirdly, when you consider this year's travel restrictions] but this is a really saturated niche. At first I wasn't really sure what to make my Channel about. I'm really not the type to get too bothered about Make Up & Beauty. I enjoy Fitness and Cooking but neither of those really appealed for my Channel. I wanted to be able to talk about Music and my experiences as a DJ but with the entire Entertainment and Nightlife Industry still not allowed to operate in most of the world, that didn't make a lot of sense either. My other creative projects are not really consistent or focused enough to create a whole channel about them and the same situation with the Sports that I enjoy. So I decided to try out a few different things and see what stuck. Then, one day on the Yoga mat- I was actually upside down at the time, always a great way to get perspective- I suddenly realised that I didn't have just one thing to talk about and that is a huge advantage. I'm lucky to live a varied and fast paced life, which is often commented on by friends and family as being unusual & interesting. That's where I got the idea for: Megan's Journey.

It's a journey of Self Discovery, Travel and Adventures. By sharing my experiences, I hope to inspire, educate and guide others on their journey. Whether it's a school girl in England realising she can follow her dreams of going to work in a Surf School in Portugal without speaking a word of the language; or a man stuck in a office job realising that he can share his passion for Music by DJing in a Bar instead of his Bedroom; or anyone who has always wished to pick up a pen or paintbrush and explore their Artistic style. My channel isn't just intended to be about my Journey but it's definitely the one that I can talk about! I've learned so much after travelling and working abroad for nearly 10 years that some of those experiences and tips much be of value to others as well as enjoyable to turn into videos. In addition, I feel like so much is changing at the moment so keeping a record of everything to reflect back on will be interesting to me... if no one else ever ends up watching the videos.

A few days ago I uploaded an Intro to my Channel where I shared this plan. I'm completely open minded to the theme of my Youtube account changing if something better comes. along, but you never know unless you try!

Let me know what you think :)
